WASHING AND FINISHING OF WOOL
AIM :--- To learn the method of laundering and finishing of woolen garment .
INTRODUCTION :---Wool is an animal fiber of delicate texture . It needs careful treatment in laundering because of the tendency of woolens to
shrink or stretch in the process of washing . The fiber is covered over-
lapping scales of the gelatinous. Moisture , heat and alkali soften the scales
of a fiber and if friction is applied while the fiber is in this softened state
it will cause interlacing of the scales which will result in shrinking and felting .
Alkali also spoils the texture of the fiber which becomes hard and yellow .
Uneven temperature too is harmful as it causes sudden dilation and contraction of the scales and thus process shrinking and felting of the fabric . Wool retains a large amount of moisture and needs very heavy when wet , and if it is hung up in this state it stretches down - wards and gets out of shape .
Therefore in the laundering of wool , the following should
be avoided .
1. Application of friction .
2.Uneven and high temperature .
3.Hanging up of the fabric while wet .
4 .Use of alkali .
PREPARATION :---Woolen fabrics are of loose structure and so hold dust
particles shake the articles to remove the dust repair the wholes and thin places as these are likely to enlarge during washing .
Hand knitted garments are liable to felt or loose
their shape as they are very loosely knitted .To prevent the felting or spoiling
of the shape mark out the outline of an article before before wetting it . Spread
out an old newspaper on a table . Place the article on it , Pull it to its regular
and original shape and then draw its outline . After washing and removing the moisture , the garment should be placed on a paper and pulled back to its
original shape guided its out line . The garment should be allowed to dry flat on
a paper as only thus will it keep its shape . Drying over a cane surface is better than wood , Because of better circulation of air . If on a table the garment must be turned over from time to time .
STAIN REMOVAL :--- Stain should be treated with cold or warm water according to the nature of the stain . For removing old stains use re-agent use in weak
solution weak acids are less harmful than weak alkalies .

STEEPING :--- It is not necessary to steep woolens as long immersion in water
weakens the fabric .
PREPARATION OF WATER :---The water must be soft and warm . The temperature of water should be constant which is 100 - 110 F or look warm water.
SOAP :---Any neutral soap is good to wash woolen a soap containing
grease solvent is useful for very spoiled articles .
METHOD OF WASHING :---
Prepare lather with warm warm water and soap flakes . Shake off the
dust from the garment and immerse it in soap solution . Washed by kneading
and squeezing , keeping the garment under water as far as possible . The
soiled parts may be placed on the palm of the left hand and soap solution
may put over it till the durt is loosened . Lift the article out of washing
water and supporting it by the hands , press out the soap water . Work in the same manner for the second washing .Rins in several water of the same temperature for the removal of the soap . If any soap is left in the in the fabric
it will damage it and it will give bad smell .Use citric acid or lime juice to the last rins for white woolen and vinegar for colored woolens . This will freshen the fabric. Removal of moisture is very important . The best method to wrap the article in a dry cloth or towel and press it in between hands .
DRYING :--- Outdoor drying is not advisable a strong sunlight and heat effects the texture of the fiber . Dry the woolens in a warm and dry place .
After removing the moisture , shake the article , pull it to shape and put it for drying on a flat surface . During drying lift shake and turn occasionally
and put it to its shape .
FINISHING :----The elasticity of woolen fabric is spoiled if excessive finishing is applied . So special care must be taken as regards the heat of the iron .All woolens are finished by pressing . The woolen fabrics should be
finished when they are slightly damp or placed a damp muslin over them and press .
FOLDING:---For folding fasten the blouse and place it on the table facing downwards from the center of the shoulder turn the sides towards the center
back . Turn back the sleeves to get the tiny strip . Fold the length into two .
CONCLUSION :--- wool is delicate texture . Alkali cause damage so it should be avoided . It needs careful treatment in laundry as it shrinks or stretched in the process of washing . Knowledge of laundering helps us to know that the use of alkali , application of friction and high temperature are harmful to the fiber .
