CRETAN STITCH:---This is a good filling stitch especially for leaf forms. It can also be used as a border for light effect.Work from bottom to top. Insert the needle from back front A, to the left of the double centre line. Go diagonally up and in at B keeping the thread above your work. Bring the needle out at C on the right of the double centre line. Just below the line AB. Go in at D coming out at E ; in at F, out at G; in at H and so on. Work alternately left and right until the shape is filled, always keeping the thread above the work.

SMOKING LATTICE:--This kind of a smocking is particularly suitable for making decorative pillows and cushions. Squares are drawn on the wrong side of the fabric knot the end of the thread and start smocking at upper left. Pick up the fabric at first dart bringing out the needle from right to left pull dots 1 and 2 together and knot securely with thread above the needle.Slip the needle under the thread between dots 1 and 2 pulling thread tightly at dot 3 to form a knot. be sure to keep fabric flat between dots at 3 .Pick up dot 4 go back and pick up dot 3 again pull dots together and knot securely . Continue down rows of dots in this manner.

SMOCKING :---Smocking is easy to do when you have mastered the simple stitches like outline stitch, back stitch together with a kind of whipped stitch. These are combined with fullness introduce by gathers set before the smocking is began or by following pattern darts.
These are two methods of smocking, english smocking for which the material is gathered in pleats first and regular smocking in which the gathers are made as the pattern is followed . The best fabric to use for smocking is one with a firm and even weave. Cotton, Poplin, Gingham, Sheer materials like Nylon, Chiffon etc... Patterned fabric such as checked and striped materials provide their own guide line. The design can be done in a single colour or even four colours as the pattern recomnends. for every inch of finished smocking about 2 1/2" of fabric is required.
WORKING METHOD:--- Rows of dots are marked on the back of the fabric 1/4" apart.Then each row of dots is gathered on the wrong side forming uniform pleated folds . the smocking is then started at left hand edge and worked to right. Pick up the top of the each pleat , following instructions for the desired smocking design. Gathering threads are removed after smocking.

Huck weave - 11

HUCK WEAVE :---This type of embroidery get its name from the fabric it is worked on , which is huck towelling, a fabric with raised threads on both the sides. This embroidery can be done with 6 strands of cotton or wool. The technic is simply running the thread under the pairs of raised threads. knots are not to be used but the thread is fastened into the same row of embroidery. you can centre a design on huck starting the first row at the centre and working eachside. If you are not centering the pattern ,start at lower right corner and work across to left. A wide range of effects can be created in the design by using different shades of threads and different materials. Eg:- checks, darts and tiny patterned fabrics. When other materials are used the stitches are taken through the material picking up a few threads of a dot or a check or a patterned for each stitch as there are no raised threads as in huck towelling.
